What is Buwa ko Mukh Herne Din?
बुवाको मुख हेर्ने दिन
Buwa ko Mukh Herne Din, or Kushe Aunsi, is Nepal's Father's Day: children honour their fathers on the new moon of Bhadra with sweets, gifts and blessings.
What the day is
Buwa ko Mukh Herne Din means the day to see your father's face. It is Nepal's Father's Day, and it falls on the new moon (aunsi) in the dark fortnight of Bhadra, in late August or September. It follows the lunar calendar, so it does not fall on the June date used in the US.
It is also called Kushe Aunsi, because families bring fresh kush grass into the house on this day, and Gokarna Aunsi, after Gokarneshwar Mahadev, the cow-eared form of Shiva honoured at a temple on the north-eastern edge of Kathmandu.
For fathers who are living
Children, however old, honour their father on this day. They bring him sweets and a favourite meal, give a gift and take his blessing. Families gather for a feast, and those who live far away call or visit.
For fathers who have died
People who have lost their father remember him with shraddha, the yearly rites, and tarpan, an offering of water. Many go to Gokarneshwar to bathe and make offerings, which is believed to help ancestors find peace. For this reason the day is sometimes called Pitri Aunsi, the day of the ancestors.
Buwa ko Mukh Herne Din away from home
The day is not a holiday in the US, so most families keep it with a call or a video call, a gift sent home and the father's favourite meal. If your father has died, a puja at home or at a temple, with tarpan, is the usual way to keep it. Many families also keep the US Father's Day in June.
